Thoughts for the week of April 7, 2013

(Read I John 1:1-10)

"God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all." (I John 1:5)

What are the implications of this statement for those of us who seek to journey with Jesus along the way?  Also, what does it mean then to "walk in the light", and how does "walking in the light" bring us "fellowship with one another"?

One thing I shared in my sermon yesterday is that I believe "walking in the light" is not only doing right things, but also doing things right.  "Walking in the light" is not just about our behavior, but also the attitudes behind our behavior.  So how can "walking in the light" by doing things right bring us fellowship with one another?

I invite you to share your thoughts, and maybe even stories of how this has happened or not happened for you in real life.  Our honesty will give each of us encouragement and strength and bring us into closer fellowship with one another as together we journey with Jesus along the way ...

  1. iv found its a lot about truth, or being honest with ourselves and others. was something I realized recently what it means to worship in spirit and in truth. to walk in the light is to keep all his commands and to keep our eyes fixed on God. its not truth when your harboring secret sin or other things hidden to other believers. john goes further to say that if we claim to walk in the light but practice darkness we lie. and are deceived. talking with a friend at work it came up about a couple different topics. the comment that the bible has grey areas...... does it, or is it us that make the grey area because we want to do what we want to do. I think its all black and white. We grey it up with our own deception. John is very clear that if we are in God and he is in us then we cant walk in darkness. 1John is pretty direct and clear cut about it. now that doesn't make it easy and we all fall short but. we strive ahead. just my own experience with it. the other thing is we only reflect the light when we are in the light. To me it comes to trust, do I really trust God will be all he says he will. if I do then the things of this world are just a waste of time. Like cs lewis says we are to easily pleased.

  2. Good thoughts, autokamper (I know who you are:)! God is light, so looking to God is how we find light. God teaches us both what to do, as well as how to do it. He is our light, and as we walk in His light, we will reflect His light for others to see! Thanks again! "Your word (both written and incarnate in Jesus) is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path" - Psalm 119:105
